Dental crowns are tooth-colored caps that are adhered over teeth that need extra support and protection. Crowns can also be used to cover teeth that are too discolored to be effectively whitened with professional teeth whitening and teeth that have been damaged or are irregularly shaped. Want to see if one or more dental crowns are right for your smile? Feel free to contact our office, and we can offer more information or get a consultation scheduled for you.
Dental crowns are used for a variety of restorative and cosmetic reasons. A dental crown may be used to:
Every dental crown treatment begins with the teeth and gums being completely numbed with a local anesthetic. Next, the tooth is carefully reshaped so that the crown can fit over it perfectly without looking bulky. An impression of the tooth must be taken and sent to the lab so the custom crown can be designed and created. A temporary crown is then placed, and the patient will have it for about two weeks. Once the permanent crown arrives, the temporary crown is removed, the permanent one is placed, and any necessary adjustments are made.
Dental crowns typically last between 5 and 10 years, but sometimes they can last up to 15 years when treated well. Practicing good oral hygiene at home and visiting our office for biannual dental visits is important for keeping your teeth clean and healthy. Tooth decay can occur underneath a dental crown, which would require it to be removed and replaced. While there are no food restrictions that come with dental crowns, we do recommend that patients try to avoid chewing on things like ice, hard candy, and popcorn kernels with their crowns and natural teeth.
