Oral conscious sedation is the most convenient sedation method for your dental appointment. No needles or gas are necessary. Instead the patient only needs to take a pill prior to receiving treatment. The pill takes a bit of time to take effect, and is commonly described as causing a relaxed, almost dreamlike state. It doesn't put you completely to sleep but it eliminates any feelings of anxiety.
Compared to other sedation methods, oral conscious sedation is less expensive since all it takes is a single pill. advanced techniques and complex equipment are unnecessary, and it's even easier for the dentist to administer. It's great for people with dental anxiety, and it even helps patients with medical conditions ranging from hepatic diseases, to epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. If you struggle with one of these conditions it can be especially helpful to discuss your treatment with your dentist prior to your appointment.
Because pills have to be absorbed into your bloodstream, they are a bit slower to take effect than methods like nitrous oxide. After taking a pill you'd normally notice the medicine kicking in after about 30 minutes to an hour. Nitrous Oxide on the other hand takes only seconds. It can also be slightly slower to recover from. In many cases, patients are able to resume their routines after sedation, but it can be best to give yourself the day to fully get back into the swing of things. In rare cases medication can result in side effects like minor nausea, which you should make your dentist aware of if it arises.
